Class of 2011
Shannon Hayes
On October 9th, 2008 (I was 4 1/2) I was diagnosed with a Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (that's a tumor in the brain stem). Delaney won her battle, took Jesus' hand and earned her beautiful 'green' Angel Wings on 12/01/09 at 8:33am. She was 5 years 8 months old. Delaney never complained during her treatment. At just 4, she learned to swallow huge pills, so she wouldn't have to have liquid medicine. She loved to hide, and jump out and scare people, and was always telling jokes, I think this is what made her the perfect "April Fools" baby. We miss her terribly every day, and will continue to raise awareness so future families don't have to endure the torture that is watching your child fight and die from cancer...
I shaved my head back in 11/2008 with Delaney when her started falling out from radiation. The way people looked at me, even people in treatment at MD Anderson was crazy.
I look forward to shaving my head again to help raise awareness and money for pediatric cancer research. No family should have to go through the ordeal that so many families face daily. My daughter Bailey would also like to shave her head in 2011, but I am not sure yet if I will let her. I look forward to meeting all the other 2011 mommas (some of you I already know) and am honored to stand up with you to support our babies!
We ARE 46 Mommas on a mission to raise awareness, raise funds for research and inspire others to help fund a cure for childhood cancer.
Each year a new class of 46 Mommas is inducted into the cause to empower and engage mothers of children with cancer. The number 46 is significant. On average, each weekday, 46 families receive the news that their child has cancer. Through increasing awareness of childhood cancer and raising funds for childhood cancer research by shaving our heads, we hope to one day be a group that no longer needs to exist.
